"ac 360" starts now. >>> we begin with breaking news. new signs tonight the syrian government could be preparing to do the unthinkable, unleash chemical weapons on its own people. the united states has new intelligence suggesting syrian forces now mixing the ingredients used to make deadly serin gas. a serious civil war has progressed. the obama administration has repeatedly warned even just moving chemical weapons would be a red line that could draw a swift response. just hours ago, president obama directly addressing the assad regime about this latest intelligence. >> today, i want to make it absolutely clear to assad and those under his command, the world is watching. the use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable, and if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences and you will be held accountable. >> the world of course has been watching in horror at the atrocitie
assignment in mind for the governor. >> breaking news, there is no job for mitt romney in the obama administration but mitt romney will get to full full a lifelong dream tomorrow. he is going to walk into the white house, not the way he wanted it. president obama is keeping a promise he made on election night by having a private lunch with romney on thursday. a few weeks ago, president obama said romney could actually bring something to the table. >> i do think he did a terrific job running the olympics. that skill set applies to the federal government. >> turns out, romney doesn't have an eye on helping the country. he is helping to move on into an office at his son, tag's private equity firm. it is unclear what role he will be playing. he spenlt the last seven years running to serve his country and now he is going back to the private sector. he is not out serving the public or helping the country move forward. this just underscores everything we thought about mitt romney. all he cares about is money. good for him. >>> romney campaign strategist, stuart stevens is complaining about
in recess. the obama administration says, no. the sessions are a sham. they last less than a minute. the congress or the senate when it decided to do this passed an order saying that no business would be conducted during these pro forma sessions. what are more do you need? the senate says we'll decide whether we're in recess or not and we say we're not, and not only that in the early part of the recess from december of last year to january of this year, the senate actually passed an extension to the payroll tax cut. so is the senate in recess or not? and this is it either going to go to the supreme court, chuck, or the courts are going to say, you know what, we can't -- this is a dispute between the political branches. you guys work it out. i don't think it's 100% clear whether the courts will decide they can decide this question. >> that seems odd. i want to throw up a graphic. obama has actually done fewer, 32. he had fewer opportunities. bush 43 did 99. clinton 95 of them. isn't this destined for the supreme court? if you have the legislative branch and the executive branch disag
of the attempt of the obama administration, correctly, to try to you know force the republicans to play ball on their terms, reality is, the collateral damage done to the poor in the meantime is so devastating, because the margin of reserve for those middle class, even compared to the poor is more significant than when you're making a dollar that you talked about and you've got go there -- i was on food stamps for three years i understand what it means to be on food stamps. most people are on welfare for two years or less, they use it as a stopgap measure. most people do not pimp the system. the perception is they pimp the system. you ain't doing much pimping on food stamps. about your a low rent pimp if you're on food stamps. >> alex? >> go ahead. >> reporter: i understand michael's point but i think he's giving obama -- underselling obama's effectiveness so far a little bit. obama doesn't talk a lot about the poor but in the negotiations, especialfully 2010, the president, his team, gene sperling and others were effective in protecting poor people's programs, and benefits, and i think they
on the obama administration if the economy doesn't recover. >> all right. many thanks, scott rasmussen, appreciate it very much. >> thanks. >>> with just 26 days until we fall off the tax and fiscal cliff, two dozen house republicans have apparently defected from the boehner plan and signed a bipartisan letter with democrats. people are now asking is there a fallback position for the gop? well, here now to tell us is house majority whip california republican kevin mccarthy, the number three man. mr. mccarthy, as always, thank you for coming back on the show. can i get your comment on this letter, two dozen republicans, they're talking about tax rate flexibility along with a bunch of democrats. what's your take, sir? >> well, remember what they're saying here. what they're saying is that they're going to put everything on to the table. what we've been talking about for so long is where the president has been awol, this is a spending issue that we have a real problem with. we agree that we'll provide revenue, but we do not want to hurt a pro growth economy here. so it's how you go about
. is that accurate? how do you read this? >> this has been a disaster for the obama administration. this has been a failure. the congress has been at the president's throat about this. basically what could happen here, instead of closing it all at once, this report suggests that the 166 people left can be brought one at a time into the united states to be tried. some of these people have been there for almost ten years and charges haven't been brought against them. some will be charged by military tribe unl in guantanamo. some can be tried in american courts in america through some combination. that's pretty much how it looks like it will be. it will be thinned out if not closed. there are six prisons and federal prisons that can handle these gitmo detainees. it also says that the changes should be made at some of the sites. what are we talking about logistically. >> it doesn't strike me as all that lodgist iing -- a huge logistical challenge. i have been to guantanamo a couple of times. the prisons built there are actually built on the models, the actual physical plans of american maximum securi
on the fact we're not going to raise the rates on anybody at any point. and what the obama administration has made very clear is it's got to be tax rate. well, the republicans are saying, doesn't have to be the tax rate. you can come up with other money closing loopholes and deductions and stuff like that. so right now it's just a dance, somebody's got -- the republicans have to come up with a formal offer. >> gretchen: i was going to say, they don't have a plan. >> steve: we've heard the president's plan. it's crazy, according to the republicans. now it's time for the republicans to come out with a plan and then have the democrats say, no, that's crazy. >> gretchen: one thing is for sure, nobody is going to get everything that they want. that's just the way it is, i think, in this very difficult situation. both sides are going to have to compromise. >> brian: i think the rolling stones sang about satisfaction and you can't always get it. >> steve: you can't get no. >> brian: we'll go over that and maybe sing it. costco is a company in which the president always leans on the ceo, the guy in c

"the new york times," the obama administration secret arms shipments to qatar to help overthrow moammar gadhafi. according to "the times," some of those weapons were turned over to islamic militant groups. the support from qatar helped destabilize gadhafi's regime, but american officials remain concerned over where the arms ended up. >> "the wall street journal," egypt descending into political turmoil after another night of intense clashes on the doorsteps of the presidential palace. it's the largest confrontation since the revolution that overthrew hosni mubarak. critics say he's rushing through a constitution with an islamic agenda. >>> u.s. and russian senior diplomats will meet today with the united nations peace envoy for syria in an attempt to end the civil war there. this comes as pentagon sources tell nbc news there is intelligence suggesting the syrian government has loaded sarin gas into aerial bombs and awaiting command from president assad for its use. >>> and from our parade of papers, "the san francis
